Licensing Requirements

 

                               REQUIREMENTS ON HOW TO SETUP A DAIRY BUSINESS UNIT IN KENYA

  CLIENT CATEGORY:

     PRODUCER/MILK BAR/ COTTAGE INDUSTRY/MINI DAIRY INCLUDING MILK DISPENSERS

a)      Identify a suitable premise to setup a milk bar/cottage industry/mini dairy/milk dispenser

b)     Contact the KDB office near you (get contacts on the links below) to set up initial premises inspection.

c)      Improve on areas identified (if any).

d)     Apply online for your preferred business unit license and pay requisite application fee.

e)      Once application AND inspection is successful, pay requisite fees.

f)       Upon payment an annual License is issued.

g)      Start Operations and pay monthly Cess and Levy if necessary

   PROCESSOR/COOLING PLANTS-NEW PROJECTS

When setting up a new processing plant ensure that:

a)      One has obtained all the legal approvals for the establishment

b)      Provide copy of building/establishment plans and regulatory approvals such as NEMA/public health etc to KDB to be provided unit on Assurance letter*.

c)       Continue with development until completion seeking regular advisory services from the Boards inspectors nearest to you from time to time.

d)       Contact the KDB office near you (get contacts on the links below) to set up initial premises inspection upon completion of     works.

e)       Improve on areas identified (if any).

f)       Apply online for your preferred business unit license and pay requisite application fee.

g)      Once application is successful, pay requisite fees.

h)      Upon payment an annual License is issued.

i)       Start Operation and pay monthly Cess and Levy if necessary

*Assurance Letter is issued on APPLICATION to KDB in order to provide a framework for license issuance upon completion of project.

    PROCESSOR/COOLING PLANTS-CONTINUING ESTABLISHMENTS

    Plants already in operations should ensure that:

a)      Contact the KDB office near you (get contacts on the links below) to set up initial premises inspection either on new license   or after expiry of the current license.

b)     Improve on areas identified (if any).

c)      Apply online for your preferred business unit license and pay requisite application fee.

d)     Once application is successful, pay requisite fees.

e)      Upon payment an annual License is issued.

f)       Start Operation and pay monthly Cess and Levy if necessary

      MILK CARRIAGE PERMITS

         Any client who purveys or conveys milk from one point (source) to another (destination) should apply for a milk carriage     permit from the nearest KDB branch office: 

a)      Contact the KDB office near you (get contacts on the links below) and provide details relating to the carriage of milk and       OFFICIALLY make an application.

b)     The Branch Manager will issue you with a permit upon successful application for the same.

Dairy Promotional Services

1. Promotion of milk consumption

The Board undertakes national promotions to enhance consumption of milk and milk products amongst Kenyans. This is aimed at improving the overall health of Kenyans and also expanding the market for Kenyan milk.

2. Promotion of export markets

A number of activities are carried out to promote export markets for Kenyan dairy produce such as organization and participation in regional and international trade exhibitions and generation of market intelligence through surveys and studies

3. Promotion of school milk program

The Board is at the forefront of promoting a sustainable school milk program in Kenya. This has already been initiated through the ongoing school milk program which is public-private sector led

4. Promotion of investments in the dairy industry

The Board promotes investments in the Kenyan dairy industry. This sub-sector is one of the fastest growing sub-sectors in Kenya and has enormous potential to provide income and employment.

5. Benchmarking

The Board continuously benchmarks the Kenyan dairy industry against other leading dairy industry on matters of dairy policy, productivity, quality, processing, marketing, technologies and practices among others.
